Methane emissions eliminated to date, measured and verified through the platform
Oil and gas operators across North America relying on audit-ready emissions data
Nitrogen-powered pneumatics monitored continuously across remote well sites
By running pneumatics on nitrogen tanks instead of well gas, Kathairos could claim carbon credits for the methane producers no longer vented. But as tanks rolled out across Alberta, there was no centralized way to measure consumption - and no auditable record to put in front of federal and provincial regulators. Without one, the carbon credits behind the business model couldn't scale.
During the discovery sprint we mapped the full emissions picture - not just the nitrogen consumed on site, but the footprint of keeping those sites running. Every refill trip had its own cost in kilometres driven and fuel burned, across a fleet ranging from service trucks to double-trailer fuel haulers.
The real challenge surfaced in the sensor data itself. Tank levels should fall steadily as nitrogen is used, but temperature swings and sensor noise made the readings jagged. Simply adding up every drop would inflate consumption - and the carbon credits claimed against it.
We realized the platform needed to both record and interpret readings - separating 'signal from noise' to provide clean, auditable data clients could depend on.
project focus
Filtering out temperature effects and sensor noise to calculate the true amount of nitrogen consumed.
Designing algorithms that automatically recognize tank refills without manual input.
Capturing the emissions of every refill trip - vehicle type, kilometres driven and fuel consumed.
key feature
Every reading is converted from a raw tank level into kilograms of nitrogen consumed and the equivalent methane emissions avoided. Combined with the footprint of each refill trip, this gives federal and provincial regulators a net, verifiable record behind every carbon credit claimed.
Tandem designed and developed a three-part platform that turns raw readings from nitrogen tank sensors into a centralized, auditable record of emissions avoided.
The core system converts each tank's sensor readings into kilograms of nitrogen consumed - automatically handling sensor noise, offline gaps and refills.
The web app brings that data together across every site, giving administrators, regulators and marketing an aggregate view of consumption and emissions avoided.
The mobile app gives field operators, drivers and dispatchers a data-driven view of their site - and an early warning when equipment starts venting too quickly.
Custom algorithms filter out temperature and sensor noise to calculate the real amount of nitrogen used - not an inflated sum of every fluctuation.
Tank refills are detected automatically, keeping records accurate without manual data entry from field crews.
If a sensor drops offline, the system calculates consumption from its next reported value - so no gaps appear in the record.
Equipment type, kilometres driven and fuel consumed are logged for every refill trip to report a true net emissions figure.
Crews check recent consumption per site and spot equipment malfunctions the moment nitrogen starts venting too quickly.
Aggregate dashboards give federal and provincial regulators a clear, auditable view of emissions avoided across every site.

What began as a way to prove emissions reductions became the foundation for growth. With an auditable system in place, Kathairos expanded from its first sites in Alberta to more than 70 producers across 13+ basins in Canada and the United States. The data also delivered an unexpected benefit: rapid nitrogen loss became an early warning for equipment malfunctions, turning an emissions tool into a maintenance tool for the field.
No centralized record of consumption.
Raw sensor readings inflated by noise.
Refill trips missing from the footprint.
Equipment failures found after the fact.
One auditable platform for every site.
Accurate consumption from filtered data.
Net emissions including every refill trip.
Malfunctions flagged by abnormal venting.
Auditable emissions data turned Kathairos's environmental impact into a scalable business. Every kilogram of nitrogen consumed now translates into a verified reduction that regulators, producers and partners can trust.
That foundation now belongs to Kathairos's own development team, ready to grow with them as they expand across North America.
